I must admit that I've been away too long, again. There are reasons, of course, but explaining myself would seem like making up excuses. Anyway, today I want to share with you some news and some pictures of cakes.

As you remember, I'm getting married this year and we're having a very white wedding cake. My fiancé and I are very traditional, as well as our families, so we are looking for a small, two-tiered white wedding cake. Why? There are two reasons: economy and Venezuelan traditions.

Wedding cakes are exceptionally expensive. Bakers usually charge by portion and average prices are around 5$ per head, at least in my city. This doesn't sound like much, but when you consider that 100 guests may cost you 500$ only in cake, well, it's a lot of money. We decided that our wedding cake is going to be as small as possible and only for us and our close relatives. We both come from big families, so a wedding cake for 50 people might not be enough. Sigh...

In Venezuela there's a tradition that the bride and groom have their own cake, which they keep in the freezer and eat on their first anniversary. I know, it sounds strange, but I've never heard of anyone being sick so far. If they did get sick, I guess they got through their indigestion together (how unromantic). We'll keep the second tier for our anniversary celebration and eat the bottom one. I'll let you know how a one-year-old cake tastes, next year.

In recent news, you may notice some additions to this blog. I added G+ and Pinterest buttons, in case you use these social networks and want to follow me there. Also, I can now recommend you products on Amazon, using the widget on the right. I'll recommend stuff I want or have, related to food, of course. I'm not sure how often I'll change my recommendations, but if you want to recommend me something, please do.
Thank you for your patience. I'll do my best to post regularly. Cheers!
The cake is a lie! |
I like how that first cake looks, but i'm not sure i'll have the same opinion a year from now...
I don't know how they look after being frozen for a year, so I'm not sure about my opinion either. I'd remove the flowers, though =P
Great article! Would it be possible to trade the anniversary cake for a gift certificate from a bakery? Then you only need to store the certificate and buy your cake a year from now.
Maybe that's even more "unromantic" than the joint indigestion...
Beautiful cakes!!! I'm with you on the traditional white, simple, perfect and lovely. I'm eager to hear more about your wonderful wedding plans!!
I like the gift certificate idea! However, I think that the tradition impies that if the cake can survive a year, then your marriage can survive a life time. That's my theory, at least.
Kim, thanks for stopping by! I'm trying not to bore everyone with my wedding plans, but as the time is nearer it seems unavoidable. I'll ask for permission to post pictures from the baker I'm hiring. I'm sure everybody will love them.
I am also planning for my wedding! :D
Here in Canada cakes are between $11 and $15 per portion (ouch) Our cake lady told us that if we give sweets to people during the reception, less people will be inclined to have a whole portion of the cake. She recommended to get as many portions as 40% of the number of guests. So we are setting chocolate truffles and candies in every table :P
Re: eating the cake next year. We are getting one cupcake decorated and that is what we will save for the one year anniversary ;)
Congrats Fairy!
I'd heard about the sweets, but I think we'll include some desserts like lemon pie or chocolate cake. Lemon pie shots are en vogue around here, so I think we'll try them.
The cupcake sounds like a great option. Our baker said she could bake us a mini cake for next year, so we'll have to decide on that. Thanks for your suggestions!
