As some of you know, I'm not an U.S. Citizen. Therefore, I can't actually protest these new laws against "piracy". Why would I protest? Well, for starters, it's censorship and I'm against censorship of any kind.
I live in Venezuela, where freedom of speech has become a luxury. I've seen first hand what censorship does to media and I depend on the Internet for information. I will not elaborate on my country's problems here because it's not the point. What I want to say to you, readers and fellow bloggers, is this: defend your freedom of speech. You'll miss it when it's gone.
If you think these legislations don't affect you, think again. Even if your content is 100% original, according to this law you're guilty until proven otherwise. Yes, they can shut you down first and ask the questions later. They can shut down your website and block your ads revenue. They can control your content and believe me, they will.
Let me get this straight: I don't support piracy. As far as I understand, these laws aren't very effective against pirates, but are hurtful for the likes of you and me. So please, please, do something about it if you're in the States. Read about it, share the news, support the blackouts, talk to your congressmen, anything helps. If you're not from the U.S., you can contact the State Department. Just visit http://americancensorship.org/ and scroll down to see how you can participate.
You still have the power to do something.
